River Chess Association conservation efforts

Tuesday marked a day of community and environmental action for our team of 17 volunteers, who came together to work in the picturesque River Chess near Sarratt. Collaborating with the River Chess Association, our volunteer group engaged in a fulfilling day of conservation work, aimed at safeguarding the river's ecosystem.

The River Chess Association is a local organisation committed to preserving and enhancing the natural beauty and biodiversity of the River Chess. The River Chess is one of the globally rare chalk streams, many of which are found in the South-East of England. With an abundance of wildlife, the river plays a vital role in the ecosystem, providing a habitat for various species of invertebrates, fish, birds and plants. The association's efforts include implementing measures to protect and restore the river's health and ensuring its sustainability for future generations.

We share the commitment of our clients in the area, Affinity Water and Thames Water, to improving our chalk streams. Eager to contribute to the conservation cause, Browne chose to collaborate with the River Chess Association for a volunteering day. Our primary focus was on building and repairing deflectors, structures designed to catch debris, sediment, and waste. These deflectors play a crucial role in maintaining the river's cleanliness and creating a conducive environment for local wildlife to breed and thrive. Some of the river’s wildlife include the Brown Trout, Brook Lamprey, Grayling and Bullhead fish.

Undertaking this endeavour wasn’t without its challenges. Dressed in our waders, we tackled the tough task of constructing and repairing the deflectors. The work demanded physical strength, teamwork, and resilience as we navigated through the water. We faced the elements head-on, working diligently to improve the river's condition.

Reflecting on our accomplishments, we emerged from the volunteering day with a profound sense of pride. Together, we’ve made a tangible difference in the health of the River Chess, ensuring a better future for the local wildlife that calls it home. Our efforts to build and repair deflectors will ultimately contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

Our volunteering day also inspired a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounds us. By working with the River Chess Association, we gained a greater understanding of the ecological challenges and the significance of collective action.

Our team of dedicated volunteers are immensely grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the River Chess Association’s conservation efforts and are inspired to continue making a positive impact on our local environment for the benefit of all.
