Chace Community School's STEM

In early July, Browne’s Head of Customer, Iain McPherson, and Learning & Development Advisor, Sophia Bruce, took centre stage at Chace Community School, as part of Enfield Town Schools Partnership’s Big Bang STEM Enrichment Fair, to inspire the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.

Our team shared invaluable knowledge about the UK's water network with the secondary school students and explained the company's vital role in keeping it operational.

The event educated the pupils about the intricate workings of the UK's water supply, from source to household. The session also emphasised the crucial role Browne play in swiftly repairing network bursts and restoring the supply promptly.

The workshop's interactive Thames Water Network Challenge left a lasting impression, as students were tasked to hypothetically manage distribution across Thames Water’s network. They learned about the connection of water lines and gained insights into the associated costs and budgeting required for maintaining such critical infrastructure.

It proved to be a highly beneficial and enriching experience - the feedback received from the enthusiastic students was overwhelmingly positive. One student expressed their enjoyment, saying, "I really enjoyed about how the company Browne came in and taught us about how water comes through our house through pipes."

Another student highlighted their interest in the water network activity, "I enjoyed the activity with the water in C21; it was fun and interesting to learn about the water supply and how to connect lines of pipes and how much it all costs." Another student appreciated the broader lessons learned, stating, "I personally liked the water event; it taught me a lot about budgeting, how water flows, etc."

Iain celebrated the success of the event, “Building water pipelines across a city is not an easy task. It was great to see the children’s innovative solutions to building a water network on the Thames Water Network Challenge.  Just like the real world, there were some bursts along the way, however all the groups completed the challenge with a greater understanding of where their water comes from. Well done!”

Browne is dedicated to fostering educational opportunities and raising awareness about the critical infrastructure services we provide. By collaborating with schools and organisations within the local community, we aim to inspire schoolchildren to consider careers in STEM, nurturing a skilled workforce for the future.
