January Back to work stand downs

January Back to work stand downs

JBrowne continued its safety stand down programme with a number of ‘back to work’ sessions for our 250 operational staff delivered on 3rd January 2017. The objective of these sessions was to ensure that everybody is focussed on their own and their team’s safety after the busy festive period when they return to work. Engagement with the workforce is a big part of our Cultural Behavioural Safety programme to ensure the message on health safety and well-being is emphasised consistently and regularly.

New Mobile Phone Policy

J Browne is committed to reducing the risks which our employees face and create when driving or riding for work.

Mobile phone usage while driving has contributed to many near misses, accidents and fatalities on our roads and we believe constitutes an unacceptable risk to all concerned. The use of mobile phones to enable access to social media, videos and music has increased the likelihood of illegal usage. The consequences of having a road accident are potentially catastrophic and a number of recent incidents as reported by National Press have emphasised the dangers of causing multiple deaths through dangerous driving caused by mobile phone usage.

J Browne at the races - Supporting Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance

J Browne has been working for Southern Water since April 2015 through our Cappagh Browne Utilities JV delivering their AMP6 Waste Water ‘React & Maintain’ framework across Kent, Sussex, and Hampshire.

We were therefore truly pleased to support both our client Southern Water and their charity partner, Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance by sponsoring a race at their recent race day in Fontwell Park on Saturday, 1st October 2016. This trust – independent of the NHS, saves many lives every year and is funded almost entirely by voluntary donations. Over £50,000 was raised on the day for this exceptional charity.

J Browne was delighted to play a significant part in the recent Thames Water Safety Summit held at Ascot Racecourse on 23rd September 2016. It involved all Thames Water’s main waste network and treatment partners both Tier 1 and 2 getting together to devote a full day to improving health, safety and well-being of all our people on this work. We deliver this work through our Cappagh Browne joint venture.

Many of Thames Water’s senior management including Managing Director of Waste Water, Lawrence Gosden and Head of Safety Karl Simons, were in attendance as well as owners and senior management of their supply chain partners.

Supporting a charity close to home

J Browne had a successful coffee and cake charity event on 22nd September 2016 at our Enfield HQ with staff baking a various assortment of goodies from Jamaican Rum Cake to Salt Fish Fritters!

This was all in aid of a very good cause. ‘Lenny’s Leap of Faith’ is a fundraising campaign for Lenny Baker, the cousin of Amy Baker who works in the Accounts Department at J Browne’s Head Office.

Lenny suffers from Cerebral Palsy. This is a neurological condition that affects movement and co-ordination. In Lenny’s case, it causes muscle stiffness known as spasticity. Spasticity causes hip displacement, knee, ankle and foot deformation, the spine curves and arthritis develops in joints. This is an incredibly painful condition and makes walking unaided impossible.

J Browne launches Electronic Utility Plans App (JBUP)

In recent weeks J Browne has developed a system to radically improve the quality of Utility plans available to our digging teams. It also improves the distribution of plans to the teams. The application called JBUP (J Browne Utility Plans) is installed onto the gangs’ tablets, and enables the Street Works Co-ordination department to send electronic colour utility plans directly to the tablets of the operatives on the ground no matter where they are. We have launched the system on our Affinity Water contract with great results.

Cyclist friendly HGV additions to the fleet

We have recently added a number of HGVs to the fleet. A big part of our buying strategy was to ensure our new vehicles gave our drivers the maximum visibility to ensure cyclist safety. Our drivers Pat Todd, Mark Coulson and Bill Gill were complimentary of the visibility afforded from the cabs particularly when turning left. Bill said “the new lorries certainly have excellent visibility with the glass panels and mirror systems providing us with the tools to drive safely on London’s busy streets”.

J Browne Volunteer Park Clean Up Challenge

Two teams of volunteers from J Browne went head to head in a competitive challenge to improve the environment at Tatem Park in Enfield. The teams headed up by Paul McMahon, Managing Director and Jonathan Dodd, Commercial Director were given two separate sections in the park to improve over two days. Paul’s section consisted of a large old fashioned children’s paddling pool and surrounding woodland, which was in a very sorry state. Jonathan’s section was at one of the entrances to the park which included a pathed entrance and four large existing flower beds. It was a daunting challenge!

Eight2O mains replacement works underway

Eight2O mains replacement works underway

We are currently delivering a significant tranche of Thames Water’s mains renewal programme, working for the Eight2O Alliance partner SMB JV. The work involves replacing mains in a number district meter areas in North East London and will involve replacing 7km of pipe. We have started working in the Woodford and Finsbury Park areas, with 9 teams on the ground, and the work is programmed to run from July 2015 until March 2016.
