April 26, 2018
We were delighted to get involved in a career fair at our local school, The Oasis Academy, on Thursday 26th April.
When we say local, we mean 50 yards away and it was great to see at first hand the brilliant facilities at the school. It was a great privilege to meet some of the fantastic young people who are working hard and making big decisions about their future careers. We met a large proportion of the 951 students who were very enthusiastic, welcoming and confident. They all had the opportunity to visit the fair in their year groups and the event was split over 3 sessions in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. We were joined by organisations such as the NHS, the Fire Brigade, a local barber, fellow contractors Volker Fitzpatrick and Ryanair just to mention a few.
Our Team for this event were Jeremy Browne, Chairman, Jane Shelvey, Head of HR, Duncan Groombridge, Contracts Manager and Helen McIntyre, Business Development. We were also joined by David Yates from one of our supply chain partners, Control Point, who brought some electrofusion equipment along to allow the students to physically carry out an element of work we carry out every day on our various mains replacement projects. A big thanks to David for supporting the event.
Head of HR, Jane Shelvey was very impressed with the calibre of candidates she met and was particularly encouraged by the amount of female interest in engineering; Jane said “I think it’s brilliant that we have such a bright, talented group of girls who are now considering a career in engineering and construction, it’s just what our Company and industry needs to get the right skills for the future of the UK construction industry”
It was great to see the students taking an interest and asking some very good questions, which kept all of us on our toes! We were very grateful to The Oasis Academy for the opportunity and a very nice school lunch which brought us all back a few years!
Well done team, another successful event.
