Power & Telecoms

As a term contractor for London Electricity, 24/7, EDF Energy, NTL. Cable & Wireless and British Telecom, we have considerable experience of working on power and telecommunication networks.

Our capability covers new connections, faults, diversions and turnkey design and construct solutions. We have gained Lloyds accreditation for excavation and reinstatement, ductwork and joint bay construction, manhole construction, LV and HV cable installation and associated civils works.

We carry out work on National Grid’s transmission network as Balfour Beatty Power Networks’ preferred civils partner. Recent projects include embankment stabilisation at Willesden and Regents Park to avoid high voltage cables slipping into the Grand Union Canal.  A number of our employees are registered NCG Competent Persons and CCNSG passport holders.

We currently carry out the Infrastructure Framework Agreement for Geo (the trading name of Hutchison Network Services London Ltd). Geo own and maintain a national telecommunications network, a proportion of which is housed within the London sewage system owned by Thames Water. This 3 year framework agreement commenced in late 2006 and is expected to deliver up to 500 high bandwidth, fibre optic customer connections.

Under the contract, we provide a turnkey solution from route design through installation to commissioning and handover. The works involve installing sub-duct within trunk sewers, blowing or pulling fibre optic cable through the ducts, constructing access chambers, customer connections, testing and commissioning.

The works are carried out under confined space conditions so the operatives working on the contract are CP1 and CP2 trained.

Using Thames Water’s sewer network dramatically reduces the amount of open cut works required which has major benefits in terms of cost, time and environmentally. Excavations for this work are typically reduced by 90% compared to traditional open cut methods.
