The Business

We are a water focused utility contractor based in North London and we operate throughout the South East for water sector clients such as Thames Water, Southern Water, Affinity Water, South East Water and the developer community. J Browne Group including our share of JV’s will turnover circa £100 Million this year and we currently employ 700 people.

We deliver multi-disciplined water infrastructure and non-infrastructure work for our regulatory clients as well as delivering utility connections and infrastructure services to the developer market. We have built our business on a simple principle; we consistently do a good job for our clients and we are rewarded with more work. We have built long term relationships with our clients by listening to them, understanding their business requirements, being collaborative to our core and quietly delivering an excellent service.

Our Vision:

“Delivering excellent work for our customers, caring for our local environment and sending our people home safe and well every day.”

Our History

Browne was founded in 1971 by Sean Browne. Sean left Ireland in 1959 with a Civil Engineering degree from University College Cork and worked in senior management roles for a number of large contracting businesses in the 1960’s before starting his own business in 1971. He had a simple vision, to create a Company that ‘we can be proud of’.

50 years later, this vision still inspires our people and is demonstrated by our BEST values. We are proud of our family business culture, our collaborative approach with our clients and stakeholders, our curiosity  to learn and improve as an organisation, our exceptional delivery, our wish to enhance our local environment and most importantly, our determination to create an enjoyable, safe place to work for our people where everyone contributes and is valued.

Celebrating 50 years

Browne was proud to celebrate our 50-year anniversary in 2021.

We were founded by Sean Browne in January 1971 with a vision “to build a Company we can be proud of”. Since then, we have steadily built the business by delivering a good service for our clients and in return earning repeat business. Today, we are one of the largest family-owned water sector businesses in London and the South East, with a turnover of £90M and long-term frameworks with Thames Water, Southern Water, South East Water, Affinity Water, Northumbrian Water (E&SW) and Anglian Water. Our J Browne Developer Services (JBDS) subsidiary business is a market leader in providing utility connection solutions to our developer clients.

Our people and their ability to utilise their unique talents as part of a team to deliver great work for our clients have always been our greatest asset. Our family business culture is built on a proud history and our ‘BEST’ values, which promote a deep respect for every member of the team, strong and collaborative client relationships, a safety culture based on openness and learning and a desire to make big environmental improvements with the aim of achieving CO2 Net Zero by 2030. These values are a bridge to our founder’s vision. That work goes on and still motivates us today.

Our Values and Culture

We believe that our business culture is based on our history and our values. Using a construction term, this is the ‘rebar’ of our culture and underpins how we operate as a business.

We are proud of our business and we have a strong people focussed culture epitomised by our BEST values.

Our Browne Family value means looking after our people, taking pride in our work and delivering every time for our clients.

Environment shows that we commit to embedding environmental improvement in all areas of our business because we believe it is the right thing to do. This is practically demonstrated by our ambitious 2030 net zero CO2 target and our environmental enhancement commitments in our local community.

Safety is a core value of our business. Sending our people home safe and well every day is our fundamental duty and drives us to relentlessly improve health safety and well-being performance in our business through challenging behaviours and creating a strong health safety and well-being culture.

Transparency means that we are completely open about how we work, behave ethically and that our actions match our words.
